History
The origins of craps is rather ambiguous, some believe that it descended from an earlier game known as Hazard that dates to the Middle Ages. Hazard was allegedly invented during the crusades by Sir William of Tyre and his knights, who played it during the siege of Hazarth castle in 1125 AD. The name Hazard is therefore a variation of the castle's name. However, other sources claim that Hazarth comes from the Arabic word 'azzah' which literally means the dice - implying that the game is Arabic in origin.
Evidence also suggests that a form of craps was played by soldiers during the Holy Roman Empire. As entertainment, shaved pig's knuckles were shaped into cubes and tossed onto inverted shields, hence, the term "to roll the bones".
Whoever invented it, Hazard became hugely popular among the English nobility in the 17th century. Some claim that the French introduced the game to America, while others are convinced that it accompanied the earliest British settlers, who were more likely to have played with dice.
Craps was played on the riverboats of the Mississippi River and soon spread across the rest of the country. During this time, John H Winn, a dice maker, added a new dimension to the game, whereby a player could either bet with, or against the Shooter. Winn's enhancement of the game became the signature favourite, which is played in casinos today.
