Online Video Poker Strategies

Every player wants to win, but having the will isn't enough. Knowledge by itself won't get you there. Success demands preparation and practice. And since you can't raise, call or bluff in video poker; here are several strategies to improve your chances of hitting that royal flush. Let's begin.

Basic Video Poker Strategy

If you are unsure whether to hold or discard cards, follow these rules:

Always hold:

Always keep a two pair, three-of-a kind, four-of-a kind, full house, straight flush, or royal flush. However with some hands, certain cards can be discarded to create better opportunities, for instance:

  • If you discard the remaining two cards in three-of-a kind, you create a four-of-a kind possibility
  • With a two pair, discard the fifth card for the possibility of a full house.

Break up the following hands:

  • A flush or a straight but only when you have four cards to a royal flush. By breaking up these two hands, you' create more profitable possibilities. For instance: if you have ace-king-queen-jack-9, all of spades, discard the 9 for the following possibilities:
  • a royal flush with a 10 of spades,
  • a straight with another 10,
  • a flush with another spade,
  • a pair of jacks or better

Improve your odds by breaking up a pair of jacks or better, whenever you have four cards to either a royal flush or lower straight flush.

In video poker, it's important to know all the rules of the game and hand odds are no exception. Grab a pen and paper.
